Tony Benn, a pivotal figure in British leftwing politics in the second half of the 20th century, who renounced his title in order to become a parliamentarian, died today (Friday 14 March 2014) at home at the age of 88. Benn was  a principled campaigner and articulate statesman. He was a visionary leader, a courageous voice for justice and a clear moral compass, respected by many- friends and foes alike.

Benn's activism, which included going to Iraq in the runup to the US/UK invasion in an attempt to forestall war, was tireless, inspired and inspiring. At the time when the world has been hijacked by the false ideology of neo-liberalism, Benn, more than ever, will be very much  missed.

Tony Benn was a true socialist and a firm friend and defender of the trade unions and working people everywhere. He fought his cause with eloquence and commitment throughout his long life. Above all, he believed that politics should always be guided by a moral compass and should give a voice and hope to those who needed it most.

In a statement his children Stephen, Hilary, Melissa and Joshua said Mr Benn died peacefully early this morning at his home in west London surrounded by his family.

"We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all the NHS staff and carers who have looked after him with such kindness in hospital and at home.

"We will miss above all his love which has sustained us throughout our lives. But we are comforted by the memory of his long, full and inspiring life and so proud of his devotion to helping others as he sought to change the world for the better."

In short, Tony Benn was a Man for the Common Good. He gave so much to so many, whilst inspiring and envisioning many to fight for justice in the interest of the greater good.

He was a man of hope and peace. May God grant him eternal rest; he was, in the old idiom, a lovely man, who if required may still be a peacemaker in heaven.
